The Estate of Thelonious Monk has successfully worked to identify, nurture and inspire the next generation of jazz performers and their listening audiences in conjunction with renowned institutions including: Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Cicely Tyson School of the Performing Arts, The Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers-Newark, Seton Hall University and Yale University "What I try to do is show the Americanization of the classical percussion ensemble by demonstrating that all the parts of the kit come from different parts of the world and represent a multitude of cultures. It's the collaboration of these various cultures that make the American drum kit possible," says T.S. Monk who will begin the workshop with the drum set in its individual pieces and, as he assembles it, explain where each piece comes from and why it's important to the collective. "The Americanization of it was putting all the pieces in one place so that one person could play it all." He'll conclude by playing the assembled kit.
